Towel Day
May 25th is Towel Day because it was established by fans as a tribute to author Douglas Adams, exactly two weeks after his sudden death on May 11, 2001.
On this day, fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy openly carry a towel with them wherever they go to show appreciation for his brilliant life and work. Why a Towel?
The significance of the towel stems directly from Chapter 3 of Adams' famous book. The comedic sci-fi story famously proclaims that a towel is "about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."
According to the fictional guide, a towel has incredible practical and psychological value:
Practicality: You can wrap it around you for warmth, sleep under it beneath the stars, use it as a sail, or wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat.
Psychology: If a "strag" (a non-hitchhiker) sees that a hitchhiker knows where his towel is, they will automatically assume he also has a toothbrush, soap, and biscuits, and will happily lend him any of those missing items.
Status: Knowing where your towel is means you are a "hoopy frood"—someone who really has their life together.
